Tom Erdmann Jumps into Race for 80th District House Seat

Tom Erdmann, a Van Buren County Commissioner from South Haven, said he intends to run as a Democrat to replace state Tonya Schuitmaker, who is running for State Senate, for the Michigan House 80th district.

Republicans Shelly Hartmann and Frank Thompson of Paw Paw have already filed to run. Frank Thompson’s campaign filing (he failed to file a (CS) 2009 finance statement and has no reporting waiver) seems confused; his candidate campaign committee was filed as “Frank Thompson for State Senate” though the filing is clear that he is running for the State House. Shelly Hartmann filed (CS) 2009 statement, has an accurately named candidate campaign committee name, and reported raising no money.

It’s unlikely that the district will flip to a Democratic seat, but I wouldn’t be surprised considering how disorganized the Republicans appear to be.Frank Thompson, Shelly Hartmann, Tom Erdmann, Tonya Schuitmaker

Vern Ehlers Retirement Makes Room for a More Conservative Candidate

Vern Ehlers has announced his retirement from his position as representative of Michigan's third congressional district. Frankly, Ehler's retirement comes as a relief; he was pretty in line with the tax and spend mentality of Washington. He voted yes on $192 billion in "anti-recession" spending and $15 billion to bailout GM and Chrysler. He undermined American sovereignty by voting in favor of CAFTA, the U.S. - Chile free trade agreement, the U.S. - Australia free trade agreement, the U.S. - Singapore free trade agreement, and voted no withdrawing from the World Trade Organization.

Additionally, Ehlers didn't support the only true pro-life legislation there has ever been in Congress, the Sanctity of Life Act. Hopefully is replacement will be an improvement. His potential replacements include

Justin Amash - Current State Representative, already announced

Michael VanKleeck - Already announced (I don't have any details on him)

David Hildenbrand - State Representative, looking at State Senate run

Kenneth Sikkema - former state Senate Majority Leader

Mark Jansen - State Senator

Bill Hardiman - State Senator (term limited), former Kentwood mayor

Steve Heacock - Chief administrative officer at the Van Andel Institute, former Kent County Commission Chairman

Jerry Kooiman - former Grand Rapids state legislator

Terri Lynn Land - Current, term limited Secretary of State

Mike Sak - former speaker pro tempore of the State House

Robert Dean - State Representative

Steve Pestka - former State Representative and Kent County Circuit Judge

Virg Bernero Doesn't Have Policy Positions (Apparently...)

So Virg Bernero has decided to run for governor and Democratic blogs are buzzing about how he is the

MDP's best chance at salvaging the Governor's race for this year.

What I find interesting, however, is that on Virg's campaign website (www.votevirg.com) there is no mention of any substantive public policy positions for anything. No on the issues page, no vision for Michigan page - just nothing. But did you hear that he's an angry fighter? Apparently clarifying what your public policy goals are has gone out of style for potential policymakers.
